#66: Zalman CNPS 9900 MAX CPU cooler Review

MSRP: 55 EUR

The Zalman CNPS 9900 MAX really amazed me. First of all with its unique looks but mostly with its performance. Without me expecting it, this cooler suddenly became the number 1 in most of our tests. I think this is mainly because of the well positioned fan which has great PWM. I was able to hear the fan go faster when the CPU was under load. I believe that it is thanks to this fan that the cooler reaches such performance.

As I said though, "I was able to hear the fan go faster...". This means of course that it isn't very quiet. Now this is only when the CPU is under load. So you can only be able to hear the fan during gaming or during any other task that requires a lot performance from your CPU. But beside that, this cooler is basicaly, perfect.

Test results:

For the testing we use our testing rig which has the following setup:

Intel Corei7-2600k CPU
4GB Geil Evoone DDR3 Memory (@1600MHz)
MSI N460GTX Graphics card
GA-Z68X-UD4-B3 Motherboard
Enermax Modu87+ 800Watt PSU

Pros:

  • Very good cooling performance. Use this cooler for high overclocking;
  • Unique design;
  • Simple installation;
  • Very flat (reflecting) baseplate;
  • Included resistor for the fan.

Cons:

  • The fan is silent, but it can get loud when the CPU is under load;

Tip:

Use the included resistor to get rid of some of the noise this CPU cooler's fan can produce. Note that the performance might drop a little though.
